Audio Podcast Episode 23 – Hotspoting

I’m Bily Foster and I’m that iPad guy
Called that because I’ve almost always got iPad with me, and in some cases two!
Today we’re talking about Hot-spotting!

I’m so excited about getting an LTE iPad mini.

“But Bily, you have an iPad mini”, you might be saying. Well yes however I have the Wifi version, what I really want to pickup is the LTE version. Having Internet access is something that’s needed if you want to use voice dictation or Siri. And the idea of being able to make it a hotspot is going to be great!

What’s hot spotting? It’s where you take your cell device (whatever it may be) and use its Wifi to create a mini network for you to hop on from another device via wifi.

For example, right now in order for me to get Internet access on my mini when I leave the studios I need to turn on the Hotspot on my iPad then my iPad mini can connect to the iPad to get online.

So why would I want to get an iPad mini with LTE if I can just share my connection from my iPad? Well there are a couple of reasons that I want to cover today.

  1. the iPad mini sees the connection as a Wifi connection and if you don’t get the same kind of granular control over what can use that connection. Quick example: Photos only get uploaded to the photostream when you are on Wifi to save on the bandwidth. But once you connect via hotspot the files start going up the cell connection. Eating up your bandwidth.
  2. it’s better to have the option to buy Internet access when you need it vs not even having it available as a choice should you ever get stuck
  3. Speaking of getting stuck, without the LTE option you do not get a GPS and instead you get Wifi approximate location, which can be good enough for some people
  4. While creating a hotspot in the iPad doesn’t seem to be a drain on the battery, but in my experience when I had my phone setup as a hotspot it did seem to drain faster so I’ll say potential battery life
  5. As I mentioned earlier not having an Internet connection means no Siri and no dictation

Of course having another cell connection means having another bill, so what I’m probably going to do is move my Verizon account to my iPad mini turn off access on the iPad and hotspot back to it if I need to and if I’m really I a pinch buy access as needed on the iPad.

I’m going on having the iPad mini for a week and I can hardly put it down. My full size iPad is starting to feel the neglect it only needs charging every two days and I haven’t even touched my Android tablets for the past week except to turn off any alerts, alarms or notifications.
Speaking of battery life, I find myself turning up the screen brightness to try and drain the battery a bit at night before I go to bed. This thing is really incredible.

At some point I think the iPad mini will go to the side but right now I’m having so much darn fun with it. I’m still in awe of its size, weight and power, I know, I know I should be annoyed about it being last years processor but you know what I don’t care it works really really well.

So well in fact that some of the reviews of the iPad 4th generation are saying its got horsepower to spare. I’m assuming because no developer that I’m aware of knew that was coming and everything is optimized for the older processor. So while newer apps will start to get developed to push that horse power, and I feel confident in waiting until next years iPad and keep my sites focused on a cell iPad mini.

Which from my understanding is going to coming the week of Thanksgiving.
