Audio Podcast Episode 20 – Apple’s October Surprise
I’m Bily Foster and I’m that iPad guy
Called that because I’ve almost always got iPad with me, and in some cases two!
Today we’re talking Apple’s October Surprise!
Boy oh boy did Apple low ball us with there September event, October they thew down the Gauntlet and then kicked dirt in the eye of the competition. Not only did the give us an iPad mini (more on that later), they snuck in an iPad 4 and blew us away with the new iMac but first lets talk MacBook Pros.
Now we have the option of picking up the 13 inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display that comes at a $500 upgrade, but I’m loving retina so much that I think it’s worth it. I’m still going to try and hold out for a retina display MacBook Air. MacMini got some updates but nothing earth shattering for us to cover.
The biggest surprise was the announcement of the new iMac which has gone on a major diet. The new display is suppose to have 75% reduction in reflective glare dual microphones. It’s shed 40% over all and lost 8 pounds.
Not only is it razor thin at the edges but they also announced a new Fusion drive that is 1part flash and 1 part HDD and all about speed. So the way it works is you see it as one volume or 1 drive. And the things that you access the most often will stay on the flash section while the rest gets archived into the HDD part.
The benefit of this is it lets you get what you need right away and then the drive and OS can slowly archive it in the background to the platters. I’ve heard of tech like this coming but I can say I’ve seen it this tightly integrated into the system.
This could be a real boon if the price is right for the upgrade we won’t find out until Nov/Dec.
So I’ll be eyeing a new iMac at the start of next year 🙂
Now about the iPad part of the announcement…
4th generation iPad WTH Apple 6 month release date to a new iPad? Really I think they did this to push out the lightening connector. Yes they did bump up the front facing camera and the processor. But the lack of any other upgrade tells me they wanted to get everything to the lightening connector ASAP. Or it’s lets us know there isn’t much more innovating they can do hardware wise, and I don’t think thats the case.
My initial reaction to the iPad mini is ech. It’s priced higher than I expected and it’s larger than I had hoped. But I’m saying that without holding it. At first I blew off the iPhone 5 having the bigger screen but once I had it in my hand and felt it, I understand the difference. The same thing could potentially happen with the iPad mini. Right now I’m not impressed but once I have it in my hand I’m sure the apple crack laced glass will get me hooked.
Of course this is something that appears it would be perfect for me. I do generally carry two iPads with me. But I don’t carry two NEW iPads with me, I carry my previous and the current iPad, I can see me carrying an iPad mini and an iPad. I just hope the iPad mini fits in my pocket like the 7″ Androids do if not it could be a deal breaker.
I knew they wouldn’t load up the retina display on this, but I had hoped for a price closer too but still higher that the Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. I though maybe they would come in at $250 – $299 so $330 really irks me.
I think they should have called it the iPad Air because it seems like is last years tech in a smaller thinner body. Thing is the MacBook Air gets its boost by providing flash to improve the speed. But the iPad mini is already flash, the only way to boost is by NOT putting in the retina display.
So today I didn’t order anything, I’m going to wait and hold one in my hand to see if the iPad mini is worth it, other wise I’ll try and pick up the new iPad. I also want to see if Tim Cook’s work at being able to increase the ramp up time is why they’ve moved the dates so close to the holidays.
If the mini is worth it I’m waiting on upgrading my iPad until next years refreshed model, and I’m hoping they add the LED flash by then too. Because a new iPad and an iPad mini each year is to much. Maybe that will be my ‘two year’ cycle there, one year the iPad the next the mini. We’ll see once I hold it in my hand.
For now, I say hold onto your pennies, we’ve got Windows RT coming out today and I’ve got to go try and get my hands on one of those. And I believe there is still a Google and Samsung Announcement coming too. 2012 is sure turning into a really interesting tech year and it just keeps getting more and more exciting!
